About Kathryn

Kathryn holds a Masters' degree in Clinical Psychology with an emphasis in Marriage and Family Therapy from Pepperdine University in Encino, California.  Because she trained in Southern California, where Marriage and Family Therapy was born and developed, Kathryn has worked under the instruction of some of the best MFT's in the nation.

Kathryn has provided couples counseling, worked with clients struggling with eating disorders and food issues, and those who are struggling with a loved one having these issues.  She has worked with patients detoxing from chemicals of dependence and those who are medically maintaining recovery from dependence on opiates.  Relationally oriented, she has helped clients find relief when the stresses of decisions of loved ones become overwhelming.  An individual's problems can not be addressed without also looking at a person's relationships.

Kathryn Martin holds a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree in Dance, and has choreographed, danced, and taught in the Midwest, Los Angeles, and Central Texas.  She was formerly certified as a personal trainer by the American Council on Exercise (ACE) and by American Fitness Professionals and Associates (AFPA).   She has taught for the Kineseology Department. at California State University at Los Angeles and in various national gyms.
With a background in physical fitness and function and her interest in mental fitness and function, Kathryn views her clients' lives through a collaborative perspective.

Kathryn's therapeutic approach is to provide client-centered support to assist her clients in achieving what it is that they desire for themselves, their bodies, and their families.  She seeks out what is uniquely best for each client.  Kathryn's active approach is routinely praised by her clients.  She thinks from a cognitive behavioral, action-oriented methodology, while looking at the environmental systems surrounding her clients. She is consistently commended for her creativity, thoughtful listening, nonjudgmental presence, and sarcastic sense of humor.
Kathryn serves on the board for the Austin Association of Marriage and Family Therapists and is an Associate Member of the American Association of Marriage and Family Therapists.

What I believe about my clients...
~All people have the capacity for change.

~As a person’s ability to manage themselves improves, their relationships improve.

~People do the best they are able to do with the knowledge and resources they have.

~Because people are essentially good, sometimes lack of knowledge
or resources causes people to do things they regret or do things
that harm themselves or those around them.
~ If you haven't worked on changing yourself, ending a marriage
because the other person won't change is a cop-out.

"It is strange how many people fail to know that
if they want to feel more in love
they should act more loving."
